 She has a significant stutter that she can only control by not focusing on her speech. In order to achieve this, she expends most of her focus on sewing or crocheting something, which initially makes her seem significantly distant and unapproachable, as her responses tend to be very generic or even unrelated to the conversation. As her story progresses, she becomes much more personable, and her unapproachable nature diminishes in favor of her more cheerful but stuttering self.
